🐚 Dating back to 400 BCE, Ancient Greek Vase Painters were keen observers of their subjects. They accurately captured the shapes and markings of the #fish they depicted and it is possible to identify most of them by species.
🐚 All painted fish plates are red-figure ware, meaning that the creatures are left in reserve, while the body of the #vessel is largely painted in black glaze.
🐚 The form of the plate was called a “pinax” or “pinakio” meaning “tablet,” because of its flat shape. The fish plate’s form was round and flat with a small cup in the center designed to hold oil or sauce.
